Sometimes, More Than We Realize
What happens after a Reiki session? Sometimes, more than we realize.
We may leave a Reiki session feeling deeply relaxed, peaceful, lighter, energized, emotional, thoughtful, joyful, or perhaps simply a little different without being able to put words to it. And sometimes, we may wonder, “Did anything happen?”
My invitation is to be gentle with that question. Reiki is not always something we immediately feel. It can be a quiet experience that continues unfolding long after we leave the session.
Reiki Doesn't Necessarily End When the Session Does
Many people describe feeling the effects of Reiki continuing for hours or into the following days. Some may experience a sense of integration for up to 48 hours or longer. Your body, mind, and energy may continue processing and integrating the experience in their own way and in their own timing.
This is why I encourage you to give yourself time and space after Reiki to simply be. You don't have to figure anything out, make meaning of everything, or decide what changed. Allow the experience to unfold.
Reiki Is a Journey of Unfolding
I don't believe a Reiki journey is about reaching a destination. It is about gently unfolding into a deeper connection with yourself.
Reiki can amplify the wisdom of the heart that is already within you. Sometimes that wisdom arrives as a gentle knowing. Sometimes as clarity. Sometimes as a fresh perspective. And sometimes as a feeling that quietly says, “This is the next step.” And sometimes it simply feels like coming home to yourself.
One session is where the journey begins. One session is where it starts. It can be the beginning of a deeper relationship with your own inner wisdom.
What If You Didn't Feel Much During Your Session?
This is more common than you might think.
Some people experience warmth, tingling, movement, emotion, colors, visions, or a profound sense of peace. Others feel very little during the actual session.
Neither experience is wrong.
Your body may simply be responding in a quieter way. You may be deeply relaxed while your body is processing, releasing, and integrating in its own way. Sometimes what we experience during a session is subtle, while the shifts become more noticeable later.
You might notice an emotion moving through, a thought you've been carrying suddenly feeling lighter, something you've been questioning becoming clearer, or perhaps you simply wake up feeling different.
There is no “right” way to experience Reiki. Reiki connects with each individual in their own unique way.
Give Yourself Space to Integrate
After a session, if possible, resist the urge to immediately return to the pace of everyday life. Give yourself a little room.
Take a walk in nature. Sit beside the lake. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea. Read something nourishing. Listen to music. Take a bath. Rest. Spend time doing something that brings you joy. Or perhaps do absolutely nothing.
Even sitting by a window and allowing yourself to look outside at the trees, sky, flowers, or changing light can become part of your integration.
You don't have to make your quiet time productive. Let it simply be yours.
Drink plenty of water and listen to what your body is asking for. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is slow down enough to hear it.
What May Surface After Reiki
Sometimes Reiki creates space for something to surface.
You might experience a vision, a memory, a feeling, a clear thought, an unexpected connection, a question, or an answer that seems to arrive from somewhere deeper than the thinking mind.
You don't have to immediately interpret it. Simply notice.
You might even want to keep a journal nearby and write down what you experienced before the busyness of the day takes over. Sometimes the meaning becomes clearer later.
When Something Feels Lighter
There are moments in our lives when we realize we have been carrying something for a very long time, a belief, an expectation, a story, someone else's idea of who we are supposed to be, a fear, or a responsibility that was never really ours to carry.
When something begins to release, it can sometimes feel as though a weight has been lifted. And suddenly, there is room to breathe. Room to smile, to laugh, to be a little silly. Room for joy.
Sometimes there is a lightness that feels almost surprising, as if your body is remembering something it has always known.
A Fresh Perspective
One of the things I love about Reiki is the possibility of seeing things differently. Not necessarily because our circumstances have changed, but because we may have changed our relationship to them.
We may begin to see something for what it really is rather than through the stories we have been telling ourselves or the stories others have told us. In that space, intuition can become easier to hear: the wisdom of your heart, the knowing of your gut, the quiet voice within.
Your intuition doesn't necessarily arrive loudly. Sometimes it is a gentle “Yes.” Or “Not this.” Or “Wait.” Or simply, “I know.”
As we become more connected with ourselves, we may begin to trust our own next move, not because we have every answer, but because we have learned to listen.
Let Yourself Rest
Reiki invites a deep state of relaxation, and relaxation itself can be meaningful.
When we slow down, we create space for the body and mind to settle. We give ourselves an opportunity to notice what may have been difficult to hear underneath the noise of everyday life.
This is why integration matters.
Give yourself time and space to let the experience unfold. Rest when you need to rest. Move when your body wants to move. Be in nature. Breathe. Drink water. Laugh. Cry if you need to. Sleep. Journal. Be quiet. Be with people who feel nourishing. Let yourself receive.
There is no prescribed way to integrate. Your experience belongs to you.
Your Reiki Experience Is Uniquely Yours
Every person comes to Reiki with a different story, a different body, different experiences, different hopes, and different needs. Your Reiki experience will be uniquely yours each time you receive Reiki.
Perhaps the greatest invitation after Reiki is simply this, Listen. Listen to your body. Listen to your heart. Listen to your intuition. Listen to what feels constricting and what feels expansive.
Listen to the quiet knowing that has been there all along. Trust.
